Gum bleaching, also known as gum depigmentation, is a procedure used in cosmetic dentistry to lighten or remove black spots or patches on the gums caused by melanin. Discolouration may also be caused by long-term use of certain medications.

Gingival recession is the exposure of more of the tooth or of the tooth’s root caused by a loss of gum tissue and/or retraction of the gingival margin from the crown of the teeth. The most common causes of gum recession may be an aggressive brushing or flossing, genetics causes and gingival type, abnormal tooth positioning, bruxism, iatrogenic factors, inflammation, trauma to gum tissue or poor oral health.
